What happens at a class?
All the classes, whether life drawing or otherwise, will vary from session to
session. I bring all materials, paper and drawing boards, and something (or
someone!) for us to draw. For life drawing you may wish to bring an easel but most people do not.
Sessions are flexible - although I have a plan for each session, I react to the needs of the people at the class.
In Life Drawing we work from a model (most sessions are nude but some are Clothed Life Drawing). Initially, we do some form of warming up - similar to any form of activity, it is hard to start drawing from cold so we might do some fast drawing or draw in a way that loosens us up. For the first part of the session we tend to look at one aspect of drawing - maybe using specific or mixed media, working on proportion, light and shade - I have many and varied activities so you will rarely see a session repeated. In the second half of the session we usually have a long pose and time for individual attention as required - an opportunity to work on what is important to you or continue with something we have looked at earlier.
The intention is to provide the type of sessions we would like to attend - with the flexibility of pay-as-you-go, a variety of venues and models and varied activities. Do look at the comments from people who have attended sessions which will give you an idea how people have felt at the sessions!
Whilst the whole subject of drawing is taken seriously, tutored sessions are lively and engaging, introducing a variety of techniques and ideas which are delivered with humour. Individuality and independence are encouraged, and activities are adjusted to the ability of the artist, whether beginner or experienced.
The aim is not so much to get a finished drawing as to explore different techniques, increase confidence, encourage personal style. Newcomers are surprised how fast they progress. Some more experienced artists may opt to work untutored some or all of the time (do say if you prefer this) but most enjoy joining in.
Although Moordown has a cafe no other venues do so please bring your own drinks.
There is a regular newsletter with dates and a weekly text for those who find it helpful (you can request this via the contact page).
